Mindy Abair

Upon graduating from the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston with a degree in Woodwind Performance, saxophonist/vocalist Mindy Abair faced the delimina of choosing between going to New York or Los Angeles to launch her career. “Being from Florida, the weather won out,” she said happily from the office of her publicist in LA. “It’s a stupid reason, but much closer to what I’m used to lifestyle-wise.” To balance things out her record company, Verve/Grp is in New York and she’s there often.

In many respects, Abair has the best of several worlds-both a talented instrumentalist and appealing singer-while also having a record company that lets her explore her creativity freely. “I’m as much a songwriter as I am a musician, “she stressed. Since her 2003 debut release, “Just Happens That Way,” the contemporary jazz saxophonist/vocalist, also very knowledgeable of mainstream jazz, has written most of the songs on her CDs. When she does covers it’s because they compel an emotional response; once a tune is in her mind-Abair won’t let it go and has to write her own arrangement.

“I just couldn’t get Rickie Lee Jones’ CD with ‘It Must be Love’ out my player last year,” the Florida-native recalled while laughing, “I just thought it such a beautiful song and I want to redo it, so I did.” For the college educated saxophonist/vocalist music is personal and very much has to do with what’s going on in her life. For example, 2005 was a tumultuous year and prompted the title of her recent chart-topping record-”Life Less Ordinary.” Abair commented,  “It was insane, wonderful, unbelievable, sometimes tragic and an intense year to go through. “

The advent of Hurricane Katrina undoubtedly was at the top of the Florida-native’s considerations and the instrumental “Rain” on her new CD is dedicated to New Orleans and surrounding area survivors. She empathized with their pain and suffering, and thought her composition expressed the tangled emotions of depression, survival and empowerment. Additionally, Abair spent some time last year helping her own family and friends repair the damage from storms in her home state, though not quite the scale of the Gulf region, nonetheless devastating. Overall, Abair is very optimistic and from own her personal experiences, knows that people in the storm-drenches regions will rebuild and prosper again.

Her unique musicality comes from a saxophone/organ R&B playing father, operatic singing grandmother,  and contemporary/fusion of the Yellowjackets and saxophonist David Sanborn. Despite seldom getting any time to relax with her husband, musician/composer Jason Steele, she married over a year ago, the Hollywood Hills residing artist loves touring and traveling.” We haven’t stopped since my CD came out (in April) and been in a different city almost every night. I keep a diary on my webpage with pictures. I love to play for people and get their reactions-it’s my favorite part of the whole thing.” Unquestionably, Abair seems to have no regrets choosing LA over New York.

Playboy Jazz Festival

The California summer jazz festival season began with a high-spirited mixture of styles suitable for just about every type of jazz listener. On the other hand, its effort to satisfy everyone The Playboy Jazz Festival only thoroughly satisfies those who really enjoy a diversity of music. Smooth jazz, although easy to knock, actually got the best immediate response, with “Groovin’ For Grover,” featuring saxophonists Gerald Albright and Kirk Whalum and keyboardist Jeff Lorber as an all-star tribute to the late great saxophonist Grover Washington becoming a hot party. In between contemporary and mainstream, new-breed singer/keyboardist Jamie Cullum also ignited the audience with energetic playing, balanced by tasteful vocals. It was nothing but a party when perennial favorites keyboardist George Duke and bassist Stanley Clarke reunited for high revving funk and fusion. Fast emerging young players pianist Eldar Djangirov and trumpet Christian Scott each put on engaging sets and won new fans with highflying numbers showcasing their talents.

Yet, there was plenty of rousing standard jazz happening to keep the purists and old guard listeners happy. Pianist McCoy Tyner’s segment was beautifully integrated with the Lula Washington Dance Theatre and saxophonist Branford Marsalis was like the second coming of John Coltrane and produced unrelenting walls of sound. Renowned bassist Ron Carter played sophisticated and relaxed numbers, while saxophonist Benny Golson was more upbeat and soulful. The Clayton-Hamiton Jazz Orchestra featured vibrist Stefon Harris for a stirring tribute to vibraphone legend Milt Jackson. Naturally, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra focused on lively Latin jazz and salsa, but pianist Eddie Palmieri, with violinist Regina Carter and saxophonist David Sanchez boldly expanded the boundaries of mainstream and Latin jazz. Violinist Lesa Terry brilliantly led the Women’s Jazz Orchestra of Los Angeles, while comedian Bill Cosby tried to keep a straight face as he led his band Cos of Good Music, featuring a bevy of all-star players. Keyboardist Chuck Mangione recalled the bygone years of the ‘70s during his set, while the Preservation Hall Jazz Band took everyone back to the beginning of the 20th century. Pop/rocker singer Elvis Costello teamed up with New Orleans troubadour pianist singer Allen Toussaint for an interesting hybrid of music. Though actually from Harlem, Eldar Edward Babb and the McCollough Sons of Thunder sounded like a New Orleans gospel group. Not to be forgotten was world music from Africa from singer Baaba Maal and his virtuoso guitarist Daande Lenol, along with multicultural hard-hitting sound of Ozomatli who begin and end their segment with a percussion procession and crisscross the world, highlighting Latin and hip-hop music. One thing no one can deny, the Playboy Jazz Festival definitely covers all the bases.

Belle & Sebastian with
Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl

Without a doubt, the highlight of any band’s lifespan is working with an orchestra; Belle & Sebastian celebrating ten years together are no exception and were quite excited about their Hollywood Bowl debut. Charismatic singer/songwriter Stuart Murdoch fronted the eight-person group in spirited fashion and occasionally broke away from the scripted program. Sometimes he gleefully danced about the stage and other times he passionately reached out to the audience who were charmed by his Scottish accented singing and wit. His band quite used to his antics flowed well with him and also shined while interacting with the symphony, conducted by Alexander Michelthwate. He skillfully fused orchestration with the band’s ethereal alt folk/rock playing.

Despite, their J.C. Penny’s styled garb they were quite intriguing, with a sound that easily draws comparison to Radiohead and Gomez.

Lynne Fiddmont
Flow
Midlife Records (39:16)

You’ve probably heard singer Lynne Fiddmont hundreds of times and never realized it. She’s been a top-flight backup singer working with Phil Collins, Patti Austin, Stevie Wonder, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Yolanda Adams, Norman Brown, Bill Withers, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston and Seal. Furthermore, she even played percussion, keyboards and sang while touring with jazz/fusion icon keyboardist Joe Zawinul’s band, The Zawinul Syndicate. Now Fiddmont, who lives in LA has taken a proverbial leap of faith and put out her first full-fledged solo CD. Gentle flowing grooves abound on it and the singer has no problem being out front and in charge. “No Regrets,” a standard popularized by legendary vocalist Billie Holiday best sums up her attitude, and Fiddmont shows confident ease on Brazilian tinged “Holiday.” However, ballads are the real proving ground for any singer and she passes with flying colors for “Never Really” and “U R Loved.”

Elliott Caine Quintet
Blues From Mars
EJC Music (1:11:46)

Trumpet legend Lee Morgan’s influence can be heard throughout Los Angeles-based trumpeter Elliott Caine’s second release. It overflows with mostly old school hard bop, except for Latin jazz spirited “Mambolishus” and light heart interplanetary effects on the title track. Overall, the trumpeter exhibits superb leadership and heads a collection of top Southern California players, including tenor saxophonist Justo Almario, pianist John Rangel and baritone saxophonist Michael Rose, who passed away before the record was completed. Additionally, Caine is a superb composer and highlight his talent on Coltrane-like “Outside In,” ballad “I Thought of You” and “Fields of Jazz,” dedicated to recently deceased and popular jazz radio personality, Sam Fields. The days of Morgan and Fields are gone, but certainly won’t be forgotten through the emerging trumpeter’s efforts. For this release, he’s definitely on top of his game and ready for a lot more fame.

Caine’s schedule and info are at: www.elliottcaine.com.

Sarah Kelly
Where the Past Meets Today
Gotee Records (44:44)

Contemporary Christian artist Sarah Kelley would have a much better chance of achieving success if she were a secular rocker. The situation though, just makes the singer, who also plays piano and writes all her material, even more determined. Kelly’s previous effort garnered a Grammy nomination and now she has Mike Clink, former Guns N’ Roses producer, as collaborator. The results for her sophomore recording, loaded with scorching support from veteran guitarists Lincoln Brewster, Nick Lashley and Slash, along with jazz fusion drummer Gary Novak, are phenomenal.  Kelly sings hard throughout, alternating between Alanis Morrisette and Janis Joplin’s styles, while also being totally herself. Hard rocking tunes,  “Still Breathing, “”Between The Lines, “and “Believe Again” will definitely get listeners’ adrenaline going, but like the singer/songwriters softer songs,  “Remember Me” and “Hold On Love”-the message is really what she wants you to hear.

Tom Jones
at the Hollywood Bowl

Over thirty years after the impacting sixties ended-singer Ton Jones still has it, and yes women still throw their panties on the stage when he performs. However, nowadays they’re more likely to be someone’s mother or grandmother, instead of a daughter or a wife. Jones though, takes it all in stride, while showcasing the booming voice behind his fame. To a packed house he mixed in songs from his latest CD, along with well-known tunes his fans can’t get enough of him singing.  A new wrinkle to a very familiar old suit was the very dynamic singer also getting funky. His dynamic band generated plenty of firepower, but also never overshadowed the pop icon.

“TJ International” got the festivities going and was reminiscent of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City.” Jones also delightfully covered Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” but his vintage hits “Delilah” and “She’s a Lady” were what the audience came to hear. The singer continued with other sixties tunes that featured updated arrangements such as “Green Green Grass of Home” and “Never Fall in Love Again.” Sprinkled in with the older numbers were newer ones “Stoned in Love” and “200 Lbs of Joy” that still contain Jone’s essential style and energy. He slowed things down briefly for a bluesy acoustic guitar ballad, “What am I Living for.”  Like any veteran showman, Jones saved his best songs for the end, with “What’s New Pussycat?” and “It’s not Unusual” to literally erupt the Bowl. “Sex Bomb” was heaved in as unnecessary insurance. For expected encores, the legendary Welsh singer did “High Heeled Sneakers” and “Kiss.” Percussionist Pete Escovedo’s Orchestra opened and thoroughly warmed the audience up with appealing Latin jazz and salsa numbers. His segment was further heightened by the appearance of his daughter, Sheila E playing drums during “Esta Noche” and the whole ensemble jamming away on “Whatcha.”

Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Bowl

If the audience had been blindfolded and led into the Hollywood Bowl, they would have thought they were extras in a Fellini movie, after being able to see again. To say the least, things were very surrealistic, with the Flaming Lips on stage with fifty Santa’s, costumed midgets, partially nude women with their chests painted with florescent paint and confetti engulfing the entire 20,000 seat capacity amphitheatre. It was quite a scene and as much a spectacle as a concert. Bandleader singer/guitarist Wayne Coyne reveled in the pageantry and encouraged the audience to get crazy since the concert was being filmed for an upcoming documentary and music video.

Musically, the Flaming Lips mostly played undistracted, excluding Coyne who thrived on the attention. “Ta!Da! got things going with driving jamming and asked philosophic question concerning life choices. “Free Radical” from the groups new CD was a wicked rocking number that set the tone for the rest of the evening. Incorporating the band’s familiar theme of rock and contemporary Japanese society was alt-electronica songs “Yoshimi Pt.1 and Pt. 2”that drew strong reactions from the already buzzed audience.

“The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” continued the discourse of rocking philosophy with stimulating videos strongly enhancing the song.  Continuing the energy and staging was “The W.A.N.D. featuring the band working together as a super tight unit. Returning to melodic emphasis, Coyne led the band into post-Beatles’ selections “Cosmic Rebellion” and “Do you Realize,” which was an incredible climax for an unbelievable and very memorable concert. Nearly stealing the show before the Lips was the Thievery Corporation, who coolly incorporated alternative, world and electronica music. They too created an encapsulating party atmosphere led by vocalists/producers Rob Garza and Eric Hilton.  Opening the show was Os Mutantes from Brazil, who interwove dreamy rock with salsa.
