Keeping up with Hearts of Light:
Lake Tahoe Restoration Update The Raviz̩'s are as busy as ever keeping the issue of Lake Tahoe and its unequaled clarity and beauty in the public eye. A brand new one hour PBS television documentary entitled, The Fate of the Jewel, has just been released. Narrated by Bruce Dern, and focusing on the issues related to the health of Lake Tahoe, this documentary makes an eloquent case for restoration and preservation of this national treasure. One segment of the show details how effective the poetry and photography of J.T. and Lind̩ Raviz̩ has been in educating the public and our government officials. We were honored when they used our work in the documentary. Lind̩ is reading some of the same poetry we used in Washington D.C. and my photos are used to illustrate the scientific data, remarks J.T. Raviz̩. I wish we had been able to add some of the live footage we took during our one week show on the Senate Rotunda and our reception hosting the Congress, especially when they voted for the Lake Tahoe funding the very next day! That was one of those indelible moments of a lifetime.
The Raviz̩'s have been invited to do a show at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in our nation's capitol later this year, their most important show yet. We should be able to reach a huge audience with this show, and it is quite important because fewer East Coast people have been able to witness Lake Tahoe firsthand. We are also working to have the Museum Show Hearts of Light - Impressions of Lake Tahoe exhibited in the Bay Area and in the Los Angeles area. I t was very successful when it ran at the Museum of California and the Nevada Museum of Art, with over 600 people attending each opening night, and thousands of people giving it rave reviews during the run. As usual, we appreciate anyone that can help us get this message out, so if you can, give us a call! implores the energetic photographer.
Other Raviz̩ projects include TV and radio spots and a new interactive technology making its debut at the 2002 Winter Olympics. This restoration project is a ten year plan and unless you make the issue visible, people can forget how important it is, especially after September 11. Each year the funding has to be renewed, so it is like having to start all over again, states Lind̩ Raviz̩. With friends like the Raviz̩s, Lake Tahoe stands a chance of remaining the pristine gem that has enthralled visitors from around the world. Stay tuned In Big Sur, go to The Gallery at Ventana, 831/667- 2787, and Post Ranch Inn Mercantile, to buy prints and books by the Raviz̩s, or visit A Frame of Mind Gallery, in Lake Tahoe, at Harveys Resort, Stateline, Nevada. www.heartsoflight.com 775/ 588-8081
